Wasp Appearance

Many people mistake a wasp for a honey bee. The key difference is that wasps have smooth bodies whereas bees appear to be hairy. Social wasp species (yellowjackets) are yellow with black stripes. Various species of yellowjackets can be identified by their markings on the abdomen.

Wasp Biology

Only queens overwinter. They emerge from hibernation in the spring and start building nests. Populations keep increasing throughout the summer and reach their peak by the end of summer. The number of nests varies widely from a few dozen to thousands depending on the species.

Yellowjackets are generally scavengers that prey on other insects, such as aphids and caterpillars, but they also favour sweet foods. Ripening pears and grapes are their favourites, but they will damage other fruits too.

All workers die in early fall, usually after the first frost. Queens hide and overwinter in cracks and crevices, under piles of wood, or in any other suitable hiding place.

Trapping

Trap Placement

Follow the instructions on the label to set up the trap. Place the traps up to 1.5 m (5 feet) above the ground. If there is no suitable place to hang the trap, stand it on the ground as many yellowjackets forage close to the ground. Make sure that the traps are set up in sunny areas, as yellowjackets avoid shady areas. The traps should also be 3 to 5 m (9 to 15 feet) away from areas where people gather.
